Amtrak California
Zephyr (2003) |

I took the Zephyr from Emeryville California back to Chicago. This
was the fourth time I had taken the nearly 2,500 mile Zephyr trip, and I never get tired
of it.
This Zephyr trip was unusual in that we had to make an unscheduled stop before we got to
Denver. My father had a heart attack a few miles east of the Moffat tunnel exit.
The train stopped for us in the Nederland/Rollinsville area, and paramedics drove
us down to Boulder, Colorado (which really was a few thousand feet down in elevation).
Lots of thanks to Dave and the conductor, and to everyone else who helped my dad
get off the train and to the hospital.
Everyone we met at Boulder Community Hospital was great. After some tests, Dr.
Holland placed some new devices into my dad's chest, and we were ready to come home after
about 10 days in Boulder. Thanks, everyone!
We completed the train trip and returned home in early April. While it was my
father's final trip, I'm sure I'll continue to take cross-country trips like this whenever
I can as long as I am able.
